Gordon Goetemann

The former Goetemann Gallery, at 37 Rocky Neck Ave., has recently been renamed The Cove Gallery for its location on beautiful Smith Cove.

For many years the gallery showed the work of contemporary painter and teacher Gordon Goetemann and the intricate batik paintings of his wife, Judith Steele Goetemann.

Gordon was responsible for creating the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s summer artist residency program, which was renamed in his honor in 2006 as The Goetemann Artist Residency

Judy and Gordon were devoted to the Rocky Neck Art Colony. They raised their family during summers in Gloucester, until retirement allowed them to make Rocky Neck their full-time home.

Many friends and passing tourists enjoyed conversations with Gordon and Judy while relaxing on the benches with yellow cushions in front of the gallery. The new Cove Gallery hopes to inspire many more in the years to come.

Gordon passed away in 2016 and Judy in 2019. In 2021, their son Mark donated the gallery to the Rocky Neck Art Colony. Working with the Executive Committee, Mark reconfigured the space and donated it “to carry on the work of Gordon, Judy and the many volunteers past, present and future in support of the Rocky Neck Art Colony.”
